I believe that this constant looking for racism and identifying events and behavior as racist just because they involve different races IS RACIST in itself; polarizes people and ignites racism and hater. Instead of looking for things that are wrong, why not look for things that are positive? It does not help to always be the victim. As the black comedian on Saturday Night Life said; “is it because I am black?”

      Dear Hana,

Thanks for your comment and sharing your beliefs. I looked up the word racism and one definition is that it is a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.” I do not believe that race is what primarily determines what happens to me or what I do. I think what shocked me the most was how ineffective the art work was in that it was intended to support women experiencing problems in one part of the world but seemed to be making fun of them instead and that those present didn’t seem to be aware of the irony of the situation.

      Kind Regards,

      Anna

I agree with you that topics like this are difficult for people and I appreciate your speaking out. I am on an email discussion group and the topic of female genital mutilation came up in the context of an invitation that one of the group sent out to attend Tobe Levin’s talk on this topic at the Dubois Institute at Harvard University, where she was introducing her new book “Waging Empathy” and discussing Alice Walker’s work and book, “Possessing the Secret of Joy” also on the same the same topic. What surprised me was some people thought something about the email invitation was disgusting. And what followed wasn’t a discussion about female and male genital mutilation, but a conversation if it should be discussed on the discussion list at all. The United States Surgeon General was fired because of promoting masturbation at a World AIDS Conference. It is so true that people are uncomfortable about some body topics.

Fired by Clinton (with apologies to Joycelyn Elders).
